What You Will Do

This position will be filled at either the Health Physicist 2 or Health Physicist 3 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.

Health Physicist 2 ($101,700 - $168,200)

Come join the Radiation Protection (RP) division as a Los Alaomos National Laboratory (LANL) Health Physicist at the Nevada National Security Sites (NNSS) in Mercury, Nevada. The Site is located 60 miles north of exciting Las Vegas, Nevada, the Entertainment Capital of the world.. There is plenty to do and see here, with multiple attractions, world class shopping, top restaurants, theater and a number of professional sports venues. This Health Physicist position will primarily support Joint Laboratory Office Nevada (JLON) activities, including projects with medium to high complexity and scope. You will provide technical guidance to customers in various functional areas and facilities. Responsibilities will include: preparation, revision and review of radiation work permits; review of integrated work plans; investigating radiation hazards in a full range of Radiation Protection (RP) assignments; performing radiological assessments to determine the effectiveness and regulatory compliance of the operational Radiation Protection Program; developing, implementing and evaluating effectiveness of administrative and engineering controls to protect Laboratory personnel from radiological hazards; assisting in developing and implementing monitoring programs to measure the buildup of radioactive materials in the workplace; helping to ensure RP concepts and policies are incorporated into Laboratory designs to protect workers, the public and the environment as well as to ensure compliance with industry standards pertaining to radiation protection; assuring that high-quality, cost effective health physics service is provided to line organizations at activity, facility and institutional levels.

Health Physicist 3 ($112,000 - $186,700)

In addition to what was outlined at the lower level, at this level the Health Physicist 3 will have lead responsibility for high complexity, high risk work activity Radiation Protection support, working mostly independently, without direct supervision with customers to integrate radiation safety practices into work plans; developing engineering controls, creating new procedures and technical basis documents; leading 10CFR835 required tri-ennial assessments; participating in and supporting Laboratory assessments; training and mentoring lower level health physicists; performing reachback to Laboiratory Subject Matter Experts (SMEs); developing and presenting local and Site-Wide ALARA reviews; calculating and evaluating worker doses; developing bioassay plans; performing RP incident investigations; interfacing with Site Management and Operations (M&O) RP Department; Department of Energy (DOE) staff andM&O Site Facility management.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

• Intermediate knowledge of Health Physics technical principles, theories, concepts and techniques.

• Intermedaite knowledge of operational Health Physics including contamination control, external exposure control, airborne radioactivity monitoring.

• Intermediate experience and demonstrated skill in conducting research, investigating alternative solutions, and recommending solutions to problems affecting radiological safety.

• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

• Excellent mathematical skills.

• Demonstrated ability to conceptualize and communicate elements of radiological protection to both technical and non-technical personnel.

• Experience in the preparation and presentation of radiological protection reports.

Additional Job Requirements for Health Physicist 3:

• In addition to the requirements outlined above, qualification at the higher level requires:

• Advanced knowledge of Health Physics technical principles, theories, concepts and techniques including radiological engineering processes.

• Advanced experience with a variety of radiological controls, radiation work permits and the surveillance of related safety measures and requirements.

• Advanced experience in conducting research, investigating alternative solutions and recommending solutions to significant problems affecting radiological safety.

• Expert level ability to conceptualize and communicate elements of radiological safety/protection to both technical and non-technical personnel.

• Advanced experience in the development and presentation of radiological protection reports.

• Experience with dose optimization (ALARA) processes.

• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

• Excellent mathematical skills.

• Demonstrated ability to provide strong customer support to projects.

• Strong working knowledge of legal requirements affecting radiological protection.

Education/Experience at lower level: Bachelor's Degree in Health Physics, Nuclear Engineering, Physical Science, and 5 years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Education/Experience at higher level: Bachelor's Degree in Health Physics, Nuclear Engineering, Physical Science, and 8 years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Desired Qualifications:

• Significant knowledge of Health Physics related to Radiation Generating Devices (RGDs), plutonium and uranium materials.

• Demonstrated experience with respiratory protection requirements and use.

• Experience with dosimetry applications.

• MS in Health Physics, Radiation Protection or related field.

• ABHP certification or progress towards an ABHP certification.

• An active Q clearance.

• Human Reliability Program.

Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Mercury, Nevada All work locations are at the discretion of management .
